Visual dominance of the sporting Brno
Vodova — the place where generations of Brno athletes grew up and where the great stories of ball games were written — has been expanded. A new training hall has been built on its premises, complementing the two existing buildings and opening another chapter in Brno sport. As the general designer, we were there from the preparation of the documentation to the last bolt on the construction site.
The 55 × 40 metre Vodova Hall is ready to host youth training sessions and international tournaments. The playing area is as variable as possible and allows for longitudinal and lateral use according to the type of sport. Longitudinally, it serves basketball, volleyball, handball, futsal and floorball and meets the parameters for competitive matches. Laterally, it can be divided into three smaller training courts for younger players by hanging nets.
A clearance of 7 metres opens above the surface. The hall is complete with telescopic stands for 180 spectators. On the north side there is a single-storey service wing connecting the new and old halls. It houses changing rooms, storage rooms, technical and meeting rooms, a reception with a buffet and sanitary facilities for visitors.
The supporting system consists of reinforced concrete columns with steel reinforcement. The perimeter cladding made of sandwich panels in two colours is decorated with ball motifs of individual sports. The roof of the hall is supported by glued wooden trusses. A pitched roof is designed over the service wing to connect the hall with the surrounding buildings. At the same time, we have technically solved the connection so that the mosaic on the façade of the neighbouring hall is preserved.
An iconic element is the colour-changing LED lighting of the attic, which transforms the building into a distinctive landmark above the Royal Field after dark. During sporting events, it glows in the club colours, while during city festivities it responds to the atmosphere of the entire Moravian metropolis.
The project also included landscaping of the surroundings — reclamation of the areas, new entrances, access roads and 35 parking spaces.
