We bet on wood
The Red Garden has always had a different character than typical sports grounds. The sloping terrain, the natural context, the scale of the surrounding buildings — it was clear to us from the beginning that the hall had to grow out of the site, not stand next to it. Hence the wood. In the ČKA architectural competition in the form of Design & Build, we were the only ones to bet on red cedar as the main material. The jury found the design to be extremely high quality and contemporary. We take home 2nd place!
The hall is designed, at the entrance to the site, as a symbolic gateway to the future sports complex. The recess into the sloping terrain follows the logic of the site and naturally addresses the height of the site.
The architectural expression is formed by the rhythm of wooden columns with diagonal reinforcements, which refer to the heraldic crest in the coat of arms of the town of Boskovice. The vertical articulation visually shortens the elongated volume of the building. The rounded corners give the building a compact and light expression. The dominant material of the façade is red cedar, climate-resistant, distinctive in colour and smell.
The building is divided into two parts: the main one-storey sports hall and the adjacent three-storey facilities with changing rooms, clubhouse, cafeteria and climbing wall running across all floors. The building is accessible from two levels: the main entrance on the first floor for those arriving by car, the second on the second floor for pedestrians, both wheelchair accessible. The foyer is designed as a full public space overlooking the playing field.
The load-bearing system of the hall consists of BSH columns glued in a regular grid and wrapped with eye-catching cedar planks, which are reddish by nature. The roof is supported by trusses in the form of a sawtooth roof with north-facing skylights . These bring natural diffused light without glare to the playing field, ideal for photovoltaic panels. The backdrop is designed with CLT panels in a view quality, which form the vertical and horizontal load bearing elements and also complete the material character of the interior.
